Halyard Building

Project Overview

The Halyard Building was the first structure within an industrial subdivision along the Columbia River for the Port of Hood River. The building occupies approximately 1.22 acres, positioned opposite the Hood River Waterfront Park. Designed to be visible to recreational traffic engaged in windsurfing and kiteboarding activities along the river, the Halyard Building features wood-clad canopies, recessed entries, and storefront windows, addressing both vehicular traffic and pedestrian activity. With a focus on sustainability, the building has achieved LEED Silver certification, boasting a durable, efficient, insulated shell with strategies for natural ventilation, skylights for daylighting, photovoltaic panels for energy production, and a rainwater harvesting system for irrigation.

Meticulously crafted civil, landscape, structural, and mechanical designs ensure efficiency and flexibility. The site incorporates low-impact development stormwater planters, a cistern, and a smart irrigation system. The structure utilizes load-bearing concrete tilt-up walls, with a main roof system of two bays of open-web steel joists. The mechanical design includes a variable air volume (VAV) system, adaptable to the changing needs of tenants. The project, spearheaded by the Port of Hood River, set a precedent for sustainable industrial development in the region, aligning with Robinson’s commitment to balancing functionality with environmental responsibility.
