From Retail to Rock Gym: Portland Rock Gym’s Feature in DJC Oregon

The vibrant city of Portland is known for its innovative and dynamic approach to urban development in Portland. One of the latest examples of this ingenuity is the transformation of a former retail space into the state-of-the-art Portland Rock Gym. Located at Peterkort Towne Square, this exciting project not only redefines the use of existing commercial spaces but also provides a premier destination for climbing enthusiasts. We are thrilled to announce that this remarkable project has been featured in the latest issue of DJC Oregon!

Project Overview

Robinson Construction Co. is proud to serve as the General Contractor for the Portland Rock Gym project. This extensive renovation involves the redevelopment of a 66,000-square-foot facility, including a new 55,000-square-foot building and an additional 11,000-square-foot extension. The project is highlighted on page 3 of DJC Oregon, showcasing its significance in the local construction industry.

Key Features

The Portland Rock Gym is designed to cater to a wide range of fitness and climbing activities. Key features of this facility include:

  • New Exercise Areas: Spacious zones dedicated to various fitness activities, ensuring all visitors have access to top-notch workout spaces.
  • Yoga Rooms: Tranquil environments tailored for yoga practitioners to enhance their practice.
  • Boulder Climbing Walls: Challenging and varied climbing routes designed for boulder enthusiasts.
  • 55-Foot-Tall Rope Climbing Walls: Impressive climbing walls that provide both beginners and advanced climbers with an exhilarating experience.

Construction and Design

The project, led by the architectural firm Baysinger Partners Architecture and engineering firm Froelich Engineers, involves a comprehensive overhaul of the existing building. The first two phases of the project included remodeling the original structure, adding new exercise areas, and creating new locker rooms and restrooms.

The third and final phase, currently underway, focuses on exterior improvements. These enhancements include modifications to the main entry, exterior canopies, covered and uncovered bike parking, landscaping, a new underground stormwater detention system, and a trash enclosure.

Community Impact

One of the standout aspects of this project is its significant contribution to the local community. By repurposing an existing retail space, the Portland Rock Gym project exemplifies sustainable development practices. Moreover, the construction process has involved numerous local subcontractors, further boosting the local economy and supporting regional businesses.

Looking Ahead

Once completed, the Portland Rock Gym will be the largest climbing gym in the United States by building footprint. This impressive facility is set to become a hub for climbing enthusiasts from Portland and beyond, offering top-tier amenities and a welcoming community environment.

The transformation of the Portland Rock Gym at Peterkort Towne Square is a testament to Robinson Construction Co.’s commitment to excellence, innovation, and community engagement. As we near the completion of this project, we look forward to unveiling a premier climbing destination that will serve as a landmark of Portland’s urban landscape.
